French Cancan by Jean Renoir (1954) – 97’c1

The Cine Club of the Alliance Francaise de KOTTE in partnership with the National Film Corporation presents Jean Renoirs’ French Cancan.

Free of charge and open to the public, it will be screened at 6.00 pm on Wednesday 20th July 2016 at the National Film Corporation Hall at BauddhalokaMawatha, Colombo 07.

Written and directed by Jean Renoir, French Cancan is a French musical film starring Jean Gabin and Francoise Arnoul. This work is a homage to the Parisian café-concert of the 19th century with its popular singers and dancers. Visually, the film evokes the paintings of Edgar Degas and the Impressionists, including his own father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Set in 1890s Paris, Henri Danglard is the director of the Paravent Chinois, a theater in Montmartre. To attract a bourgeois clientele, he decides to revive an old out-of-fashion dance, the cancan, and to build a new facility, the Moulin Rouge. Nini, a laundress, becomes the new star.c2

French Cancan won the Grand Prize of the Academy of Cinema – 1956. François Truffaut called it a milestone in the history of colour of cinema. “Every scene is a cartoon in movement Madame Guibole’s dance class reminds us of a Degas sketch.”
