Synopsis

quai_d_orsay_1
AlexandreTaillard de Vorms is tall and impressive, a man with style, attractive to women. He also happens to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the land of enlightenment: France. With his silver mane and tanned, athletic body, he stalks the world stage, from the floor of the United Nations in New York to the powder keg of Oubanga. There, he calls on the powerful and invokes the mighty to bring peace, to calm the trigger-happy, and to cement his aura of Nobel Peace Prize winner-in-waiting. AlexandreTaillard de Vorms is a force to be reckoned with, waging his own war backed up by the holy trinity of diplomatic concepts: legitimacy, lucidity and efficacy. He takes on American neo-cons, corrupt Russians and money-grabbing Chinese. Perhaps the world doesn’t deserve France’s magnanimousness, but his art would be wasted if just restricted to home turf. Enter the young Arthur Vlaminck, graduate of the elite National School of Administration, who is hired as head of “language” at the foreign ministry. In other words, he is to write the minister’s speeches. But he also has to learn to deal with the sensibilities of the boss and his entourage, and find his way between the private secretary and the special advisers who stalk the corridors of the Quai d’Orsay – the ministry’s home – where stress, ambition and dirty dealing are the daily currency. But just as he thinks he can influence the fate of the world, everything seems threatened by the inertia of the technocrats.

Dans la Courby Pierre Salvadori (2014) – 97’

Untitled-2

The Cine Club of the Alliance Francaise de KOTTE in partnership with the National Film Corporation presents Pierre Salvadori’ In the Courtyard.

Free of charge and open to the public, it will be screened at 6.00 pm on Wednesday 21thSeptember 2016 at the National Film Corporation Hall at BauddhalokaMawatha, Colombo 07.

Middle-aged musician Antoine suddenly decides to end his career. After several days’ aimless wandering, he is hired as the caretaker of an old residential building in Paris. Mathilde is a recently retired resident, generous-spirited and deeply involved with the management of the building. After she discovers a crack in her living room wall, her worry gradually turns to panic – what if the building were to collapse ? Slowly, Antoine develops a fondness for this woman he is afraid will slip into madness. Through a confusion of misfires and anxiety, the two develop an awkward friendship, funny yet solid, which might just get them

‘Guided by Salvadori’s sensitive but excessively mollifying direction, the film occasionally pulls back from more piercing insights. (The invocation at one point of Raymond Carver’s exquisite poem “Sleeping,” meanwhile, is reaching for a profundity that isn’t quite there.) But the leads effectively fill in the pain between the lines: Deneuve is immensely sympathetic as a proud woman frightened by the unfamiliarity of her own mental state, with Kervern shaggily touching as someone who has a little more knowledge of the abyss they’re facing, but not the self-control to avoid it.’

French Cancan

FRENCH CANCAN

Wednesday 20th of July, 6pm – CINE CLASSIC

French Cancan by Jean Renoir (1954) – 97’c1

The Cine Club of the Alliance Francaise de KOTTE in partnership with the National Film Corporation presents Jean Renoirs’ French Cancan.

Free of charge and open to the public, it will be screened at 6.00 pm on Wednesday 20th July 2016 at the National Film Corporation Hall at BauddhalokaMawatha, Colombo 07.

Written and directed by Jean Renoir, French Cancan is a French musical film starring Jean Gabin and Francoise Arnoul. This work is a homage to the Parisian café-concert of the 19th century with its popular singers and dancers. Visually, the film evokes the paintings of Edgar Degas and the Impressionists, including his own father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Set in 1890s Paris, Henri Danglard is the director of the Paravent Chinois, a theater in Montmartre. To attract a bourgeois clientele, he decides to revive an old out-of-fashion dance, the cancan, and to build a new facility, the Moulin Rouge. Nini, a laundress, becomes the new star.c2

French Cancan won the Grand Prize of the Academy of Cinema – 1956. François Truffaut called it a milestone in the history of colour of cinema. “Every scene is a cartoon in movement Madame Guibole’s dance class reminds us of a Degas sketch.”
