Bonjour Cinéma 2017

Bonjour Cinéma! 2017 – Francophone Film Festival – Celebrating diversity and cultural dialogue with high quality movies

Each year in March the « mois de la Francophonie » is celebrated all over the world. In Sri Lanka, the Embassy of France, the Embassy of Switzerland, the Embassy of Vietnam, Wallonie-Bruxelles International, represented by the Consulate of Belgium, the Canadian High Commission the Consulate of Tunisia, and the Alliance Française de Kotte in association with the Bandaranaike Center for International Studies (BCIS) and Agenda 14 have come together to present the Festival Bonjour Cinéma!

In 2017, Bonjour Cinéma! will be held from the 15th to the 19th March in Colombo and from the 18th to the 19th March in Kandy and take place under the patronage of internationally-renowned actress Swarna Mallawarachchi who just took home a Lifetime Achievement award at the 23th Vesoul International Film Festival (VIFF) of Asian Cinema in France. She is known as the “Golden star of Sinhalese cinema”, has won the best actress award 26 times and has been a UNHCR ambassador for women’s rights in Sri Lanka since 2004. We also have the great honor to host Sumitra Peries as Special Guest.

This year the Festival is celebrating diversity and cultural dialogue and will present a collection of very high-quality movies produced in member countries of the International Organisation of “La Francophonie” (OIF), reflecting the diversity of the francophone world. All the films will be presented with English subtitles, enabling the audience to experience different aspects of the Francophone world through cinema. Aiming at bringing free cultural activities that entertain, educate and improve cross-cultural understanding, to both Sri Lanka and international community, young Sri Lankan cinema will also be present through a series of four short films which will be shown before the official selection.

The entire team of the Festival gives special thanks to Agenda 14, Bandaranaike Center for International Studies (BCIS), the Institut Français and all other partners and sponsors for contributing to the 12th edition of Bonjour Cinéma!

Synopsis

quai_d_orsay_1
AlexandreTaillard de Vorms is tall and impressive, a man with style, attractive to women. He also happens to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the land of enlightenment: France. With his silver mane and tanned, athletic body, he stalks the world stage, from the floor of the United Nations in New York to the powder keg of Oubanga. There, he calls on the powerful and invokes the mighty to bring peace, to calm the trigger-happy, and to cement his aura of Nobel Peace Prize winner-in-waiting. AlexandreTaillard de Vorms is a force to be reckoned with, waging his own war backed up by the holy trinity of diplomatic concepts: legitimacy, lucidity and efficacy. He takes on American neo-cons, corrupt Russians and money-grabbing Chinese. Perhaps the world doesn’t deserve France’s magnanimousness, but his art would be wasted if just restricted to home turf. Enter the young Arthur Vlaminck, graduate of the elite National School of Administration, who is hired as head of “language” at the foreign ministry. In other words, he is to write the minister’s speeches. But he also has to learn to deal with the sensibilities of the boss and his entourage, and find his way between the private secretary and the special advisers who stalk the corridors of the Quai d’Orsay – the ministry’s home – where stress, ambition and dirty dealing are the daily currency. But just as he thinks he can influence the fate of the world, everything seems threatened by the inertia of the technocrats.
