NOSTALGIE 05 – The Streets of Paris

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
11th & 12th July 2015
@ Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, Colombo 7.
Open to the public from 10 am to 7 am

fs2015-nostalgieKumar de Silva, well-known media personality, is back again this summer with the fifth edition of his annual series of black and white photographic exhibitions ‘Nostalgie 05’, which brings the streets of Paris to life in a trillion shades of gray.

“This year’s theme has been inspired by one of my very strange hobbies, which is observing human behavioural patterns. The streets of Paris constitute a gigantic and living open-air art gallery with its little microcosms of performance art. There are its conscious performers whom people watch, look at, applaud and recompense, or even totally ignore and walk away. There are also those unconscious ones whose performances are more spontaneous and refreshingly unpredictable. They are there … all over. You only have to stop and look … as they unfold beneath your eyes in a multi-dimensional real life performance.”

From the benches of the school to the ESAT, Raphe (HEC) has ceased to combine his professional work with his artistic development. Designer Hachette to graphic designer 2D at PSA, passing by the declination of the graphic Charter of the Innocent (smoothies) products, his career takes a new lease of life when he decided to devote himself fully to the development of the collective.

His different experiences gave him several strings to his bow and a large address book and network of artists. His asset: relate and associate the appropriate elements to design original artistic concepts.

Such a binding, he cultivates the art to unify a work by several artists, by deploying its graphic universe made of objects, scenery and landscapes with endless curves.

60 Solutions to Climate Change

A problem without a solution is a poorly stated problem, said Albert Einstein.

Contrary to what many people think, global warming is not merely a problem. It is also a flurry of solutions and opportunities that have already popped out from civil society, from corporations, from institutions and from individuals as well. Some are well known, others less so; some are surprising, others are expected; some will have a global impact, others are of symbolic order; some are local, others will have a planetary reach.

An exhibition of international standard made with aerial photographs showcasing “60 Solutions against Climate Change” by the world-renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, will be exhibited around the country throughout the next 6 months.
The exhibition will address the themes of inventing new development models, living together, feeding the world, energy efficiency and sustainable development. Interactive activities, testimonies, posters explaining the technical aspects of climate change and a “video zone” will create awareness about the effects of the complex phenomenon of tackling climate change and greenhouse gases.

This free exhibition will be of immense educational value to students following environment and nature subjects, students in science streams to grasp new findings on global climatic changes and to all students on its global socio-economic impacts.

Exhibition will be open to the public and all schools

A THIRSTY WORLD (2012) Faithful to Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s reputation, , filmed in some 20 countries, reveals the mysterious and fascinating world of fresh water through spectacular aerial images shot in regions that are difficult to reach and rarely filmed, like Southern Sudan or Northern Congo. It also lets us discover the most beautiful landscapes on our planet, the lakes, rivers and wetlands created by water. It attempts to bring together Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s trademark aerial view of the world with the harsh, everyday reality of all those people who are deprived of water and may even die for lack of it, the people engaged in the daily struggle to find water, purify it or bring it to those who need it.

fs2015-adversaire-3The Adversary, a French novel by Emmanuel Carrere translated from French to Sinhala by Niroshini Gunasekera, will be launched at this occasion. There will be a reading of extracts by the translator along with movie extracts that will be presented too.

The novel narrates a story based on real events. In 1993, Frenchman Jean-Claude Romand killed his wife, his children and his parents before attempting unsuccessfully to commit suicide. The police survey revealed that he wasn’t a WHO high profile medical officer as he claimed. Indeed, for eighteen years, he lied to his family: he had no job at all and when they began to realize the truth, he simply decided to kill them.

Emmanuel Carrere is a French writer, scriptwriter and director born in 1957. He has authored several best sellers, notably a biography of Philip K. Dick and novels like “The Moustache”, “Class trip”. These two and “The Adversary” have been adapted for film.

fs2015-adversaire-1Niroshini Gunasekara is a Professor in French at the University of Kelaniya. She has already translated seven French novels into Sinhala and has won the Prashastha Award at the State Literary Awards 2004 for her translation of Un Barrage contre le Pacifique (The Sea Wall) by Marguerite Duras.

This question of identity and its abyss of uncertainty, the reality and the appearance, the illusion and the elusive truth of the beings and the world (…), an uncertainty that looks like sinkholes, intrinsic to human consciousness, [is] felt in The Adversary, dizzying.
